In case you missed this year’s Czech Beer Festival (Český pivní festival), taking place at Letná in May, don’t fret—organizers of the fest, the biggest in the Czech Republic, have set up a summer beer tent in the heart of Malá Strana, serving a best-of selection from that event.

Open since mid-June, you’ll find Zahrádka Vítězná 18 tucked away from the bustling Újezd tram hub under Petřín. The urban oasis offers a number of tent-shaded tables and an actual garden lining a wall of the historic courtyard and tended regularly by an elderly neighbor.

We spoke with Klára Jeřábková, production assistant for the Czech Beer Festival who says that the owners created their summer beer haven simply as a response to the magic of the space.

“It was once an ancient storage area of sorts which held the horses, bricks, and building materials that were used to build Malá Strana. In the early 20th century it was supposedly a brothel,” says Ms. Jeřábková.

So far the centrally located open-air pub has seen a regular flow of visitors—a mix of locals and tourists stopping by to escape the heat and sample rotating taps from the microbrewers represented at the beer festival, including Permon, Rodinný Pivovar Zichovec, Zámecký Pivovar Frýdlant, and Pivovar Bohemia Regent.

Beer prices start around 50CZK; beer flights of four small beers are also available.

Additional beverages of note: wine from a vineyard in Kutná Hora, as well as cocktails and, for picnickers headed to the lush lawns of neighboring Kampa Park or Petřín Hill, bottles of Czech craft beer to go.

A simple menu of salads and burgers and steaks with Belgian fries, not to mention a new foosball table, keeps the atmosphere festive.

Zahrádka Vítězná 18 is open daily from 11am to 10pm, but only through the end of October.

“We would love to open again next year as there isn’t any place like this in Prague, but it all depends on the reconstruction of the houses around us so we’re unable to confirm any dates as of yet,” Ms. Jeřábková says.

We can’t think of a better spot to celebrate International Beer Day—and escape Prague’s recent heat wave.
