It’s official: blueberry season is here in Czech Republic!

The local cooperative of growers, which operate under the name Freshly Torn, ship their produce to multiple major retailers, including Makro, Globus, Kaufland, Tesco, Albert networks and the Košík.cz and Rohlík.cz online stores. You can find the blueberries in stores the day after they are picked.

“This year, in the second year of harvest, an average of 1.5 kilograms of blueberries should grow on each plant. They reach full fertility after five years and each should give five kilos,” the head of the farm Jakub Láčik said in a statement.

“We have 105,000 plants and six varieties to cover as long a period of time as possible. The collection started this year at the turn of June and July, the end of the collection is expected at the end of August.”

Blueberries are one of the most delicious summer fruits in Czech Republic, and they are loaded with antioxidants and other beneficial vitamins. The blueberry farm, managed by Farmarket, has more than 25 hectares of shrubs; more than six tons of Canadian blueberries are harvested daily.

There are so many ways to use fresh blueberries, but one of the most traditional ways is by making Czech dumplings filled with fresh blueberries.

Here’s the recipe, if you want to give it a try.

Ingredients

  • 500g semicoarse flour, or “polohruba” flour.
  • 1 teaspoon semolina sugar and a sprinkle of yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 42 grams fresh yeast, or 1 cube
  • 250 ml of lukewarm water
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 l blueberries

You may want to have some melted butter, soft cottage cheese or sour cream and powdered sugar for topping at the end, as well.

Instructions

Combine flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl and mix to combine. Make a small hole in the middle of the mixture and crush the yeast into the hole. Sprinkle with some sugar and add some milk and let the yeast rise. Then, add the remaining milk and eggs and mix to make the dough. Leave the dough to rise for 30 minutes. Divide the dough into six equal parts and roll each piece into a circle. Fill each piece with blueberries and shape it into dumplings, or a circle. Let it rise for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, start boiling some salted water. Once it is boiling, put the dumplings inside and cook them for three to five minutes on each side. Once they have finished cooking, piece the dumplings with a fork to ensure the steam is released and they do not coagulate. Serve with melted butter, cottage cheese or sour cream and some powdered sugar.
