Called čarodějnice (Witches), pálení čarodějnic (Burning of Witches), or Filipojakubská noc (Philip and Jacob’s Night) in Czech, and Walpurgisnacht in German, the night of April 30 marks the annual witch-burning festivities that symbolize the end of winter around the world.

In Czech tradition, roaring fires and towering effigies are accompanied by families gathering to roast sausages known as špekáček, a staple at festive bonfires, made of pork and beef and infused with špek (pork fat).

Festivities typically begin in the afternoon with activities for children and culminate in the lighting of the straw effigy of the witch. Live music and food stalls enhance the merriment, making it an event ablaze with family-friendly appeal.

In years past, bonfires have been cancelled due to high winds; if you build your own, it’s essential to check for adverse weather. Regions and municipalities may prohibit the lighting of fires based on warnings from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ). These measures are coordinated with the Fire Rescue Service. Starting this year, burning leaves is also prohibited.

Public bonfires may also be curbed due to the weather. However, festivities typically continue, just minus the flaming witches.

A witch-burning timeline

🔥The origins of the custom are debated, with some tracing it to a 19th-century entertainment for children, while others link it to foreign celebrations like Walpurgis Night or the Celtic festival of Beltane, which mark the transition between the dark and light halves of the year.
🔥Historically, the night was believed to protect against evil forces, with fires symbolically driving away witches. Burning straw effigies was thought to ensure a fertile year and good health for the community.
🔥During World War II, outdoor fires were prohibited, and under communism, the holiday was renamed Vatra miru (Peace Bonfire), with the following day dedicated to celebrating labor.
