Overall food inflation in January 2026 stood at 1.3 percent year-on-year, according to the Czech Statistical Office, well below the broader inflation rate of 1.6 percent. But averages mask sharp movements in either direction for individual foods.

Shoppers in Czechia are paying more for some staples and less for others, meaning your weekly grocery bill can swing depending on what’s in season or affected by global supply issues.

Vegetables like onion and cabbage are bargains this winter, while cucumbers, coffee, and chocolate are pricier than a year ago.

And then there's celeriac: "In twenty years, I don't remember selling celery so cheaply; we are reaching the bottom of the price," Petr Hanka of Hanka Mochov vegetable distributor told Czech media.

If you're really looking to slash food costs, use it to make creamy winter soups (celerová polévka), shredded salads with mayonnaise (celerový salát), or roasted or mashed as a side dish, Czech style.
