Sunset concerts are coming to Prague's most famous rooftop venue

A series of 69 musical performances will kick off on the roof of the Lucerna Palace in Prague tomorrow, which will be orchestrated to end with the setting sun. The Lucerna rooftop social space will re-open to the public from May 30 and continue to operate every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday until the end of October.

“Always about thirty minutes before sunset, we will draw the symbolic curtain and announce the main performer: the sun and its musical accompaniment. The last tone will sound exactly when the sun disappears behind Prague Castle,” said Ondřej Kobza founder of the Lucerna rooftop project at the ceremonial opening of the new season.

A cherry orchard of more than twenty trees, inspired by Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard, can also be enjoyed by visitors along with unique views of the Czech capital.

“We have grown a cherry orchard here, in the shade of which people can hide and look at the panorama of Prague. The idea is not to make a garden on the roof of Lucerna at all costs, which is taken out of context but to reflect the roof and allow people to enjoy it, what is unique about this place,” landscape architect Jitka Tomsová told the press at the opening of the rooftop on Wednesday.

Upcoming performances include shows by Lenka Dusilová, Dana Bárta, Dagmar Pecková, and notable Czech artists. Admission will be 100 crowns.

Cherry-themed drinks as well as an exhibition on the building of the Lucerna Palace and on the history of the Havel family, builders, and owners of the Lucerna await rooftop patrons.

The Lucerna building bears the distinctive elements of the fading Art Nouveau movement and the Modernism that was emerging when it was completed in 1921 by the grandfather of President Václav Havel.

The rooftop of Prague’s Lucerna passage represents 1,000 m2 of unique space above the historical Lucerna Palace.
