This year marks the 700th anniversary of the birth of the founding father of Bohemia, King Charles IV. In a year packed with tributes and events commemorating the life of the Holy Roman Emperor, one stands out: the newly opened Ledárium, a stunning ice temple atop the slopes of the Spindleruv Mlyn ski resort in the Krkonoše mountains.

Real-Life Ice Kingdom Opens in Czech Mountains

Located at the peak of the resort’s St. Peter chairlift, the temple features a gallery of life-like ice sculptures, many devoted to the theme of Charles IV, including a giant statue of the beloved monarch himself, renderings of his numerous wives, and landmark monuments of the era, including a frosty replica of Karlštejn Castle.

Sculptures are protected from the elements with a special air-conditioning system. In addition to the exhibit, the Ledárium will host a series of performances for the public; the first concert of the season is on January 22.

The exhibition is open daily (9:00–15:30) now through March 31. Entry to the exhibition is free although non-skiers must purchase a chairlift ticket.
