Prague’s Petřín Tower to Light Up for Special Days

The lookout tower will appear gold this Saturday to commemorate Childhood Cancer Day, and turn green in March for St. Patrick’s

In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris last autumn, Prague’s Petřín Tower – which was modeled after, and strongly resembles, the Eiffel Tower – was lit up in blue, white, and red in a show of solidarity.

The special lighting was not a first-time event. On public holidays and other important dates, the tower has also been lit up in red, white, and blue after the Czech Republic flag.

During the past two years, the tower has been lit in green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, which will occur again on March 17, 2016.

This Saturday, the tower will sport some new illumination: it will become gold to commemorate Childhood Cancer Day in the Czech Republic, which is aimed at raising awareness of childhood oncology.

The event will also include a lantern procession from the National Theater to Wenceslas Square, beginning at 17:00. More information can be found on their website.

Petřín’s new illumination for these events has been approved by city councilors, and could open the doors for the tower to sport some more colors in the future.

However, not everyone agrees with the lighting. The Prague Conservation Reserve issued a statement asserting that the illumination should only be granted for national holidays and “extraordinarily” important days, according to iDnes.cz.
