Pay By Bank Card On Tram 22 This Month

A pilot program launching next week will allow locals and tourists to buy fares via credit card

A pilot program that would allow transit riders to pay via credit card on selected Prague trams is set to launch this month, reports Lidovky.cz.

The trial operation will start on April 12 and will be available on two trams on the busy 22 line which runs from White Mountain to Nádraží Hostivař and hits a number of key Prague sites, including Prague Castle, along the way.

If the project is a success, the Czech capital will join the ranks of Brno, Pilsen, and other cities that have already implemented this convenient way of buying fares.

Transit authorities told the site that they are predicting success with credit card payments and hope that in addition to facilitating easier travel that it will encourage the use of public transport among visitors.

Contactless payment terminals will be located on two 15T Škoda trams. Should the bank card system prove successful it may eventually extend from trams to suburban bus lines.

Liberec was the first Czech city to offer bank card payments on two of its tram lines from November 2014.
