If, like me, you sometimes describe your child’s academic focus as "enthusiastically distracted" or “highly selective,” take a deep breath; you are absolutely not alone.

Here in the Czech Republic, the pressure to have your entire future planned out by the ripe old age of 14 (or, in the case of those terrifyingly smart 8-year gymnázium applicants, 11) is real. And let me assure you, kids, parents, Czechs, expats, we’re all struggling.

That's because the number of majors is increasing, schools are competing with each other in terms of offerings, parents are searching for information on social media, and the internet is inundated with advice and conflicting recommendations.
