Next-Gen Tram Now Running in Prague

The sleek new EVO 1 is currently carrying Prague passengers as part of a test run

You might have noticed a striking new white & yellow tram running on some Prague lines since the beginning of this month.

The EVO 1 is a next-generation tram made by PRAGOIMEX that debuted in Ostrava last summer at the Czech Raildays. Now, a single carriage is carrying passengers in Prague during a test phase that will run through August.

It’s a single-cell, low-floor tram that’s being called the first of its kind in the Czech Republic. It comes with four doors, designed to allow for quicker loading and unloading of passengers.

Other features include free WiFi and air conditioning that maintains a stable temperature within the vehicle. It has 30 seats and standing room for an additional 80 passengers.

Its appearance on Prague streets is certainly different than the familiar red & white trams that patrol the city. Like the ever-popular grease tram, EVO 1 could soon build a large fanbase.

“This project fulfills my vision of the direction Prague should follow in the future, a way of fostering innovation, education, science and research, finding new and clever solutions,” Deputy Mayor for Transport Petr Dolínek told iDnes.cz.

It’s unclear, however, if and when a fleet of EVO 1 trams might make it to Prague. The city has already contracted 250 new 15T trams from manufacturer Škoda, which are to be delivered through 2018. The new 15Ts also come with air conditioning and WiFi.

If you want to catch a ride aboard the operational EVO 1 in Prague, you can currently do so on the 5 and 7 lines during the weekend and the 6 line on Mondays.
