New Tram Line at Muzeum to Connect Vinohrady & New Town

A new tram line between the buildings of the National Museum in Prague that should connect Vinohrady with New Town is near completion, but the city still doesn’t know exactly where the track will lead.

To limit the impact of the construction, work on the track was conducted during the reconstruction of the National Museum buildings, which is set to finish (partially, at least) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia on October 28, 2018.

The new line will eventually bring trams from Vinohradská to Bolzanova street in Prague 1, the current tram stop for Prague’s main train station Hlavní nádraží.

Exactly how the trams will get there, however, is still a matter of debate.

Currently, the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) is considering two primary options. The first would involve the line continuing down Legerova street and through Vrchlického sady, the large park in front of Hlavní nádraží.

The second, and perhaps more interesting, option would see trams running down the top of Wenceslas Square before turning right at Opletalova street. Trams previously drove through the top half of the Square until 1980.

Various combinations of the two primary options are also being discussed.

Within two years, the new track is expected to be connected to the existing line in Vinohrady. After that, it will extend to the city center based upon which option is finally chosen.
