About a third of Czechs believe artificial intelligence will impact their jobs within five years, according to a new Charles University/Ipsos study. Software engineers, graphic designers, and journalists expect the greatest effects.

While four in 10 think AI won’t affect them and nearly a quarter remain unsure, those under 34 anticipate more influence (56 percent). Over 70 percent foresee impacts on the named professions. Most believe other jobs like law and teaching will also change.

More than half of respondents predict a hybrid human-AI relationship for journalists in five years, up from 41 percent in April. ChatGPT’s popularity is slightly rising too, from 15 percent trying it six months ago to 21 percent now. Younger users under 24 are its prime demographic.

According to Ipsos, 70 percent of the Czech population believes that the professions of software engineers, graphic designers, and journalists will be influenced by the adaptation of AI tools. On the contrary, those in the legal and education fields expect the least influence from AI.

“A new generational dividing line is emerging around 30,” says researcher Václav Moravec of Charles University’s journalism department.

Curiosity drove 80 percent of ChatGPT trials, and 70 percent used it for fun. Students employed it for schoolwork more (81 percent), while 19 percent enjoyed it for solitude.

Michal Kormaňák of pollster Ipsos notes heavy media coverage sparked initial interest in the technology. Still, “younger generations are more open to experimenting with new opportunities,” he says, finding tools like ChatGPT becoming habitual for some, with 10 users accessing it daily. Over a third were deterred after one try.

The findings suggest AI expectations are growing as chatbot adoption gradually increases in the Czech Republic. While some remain skeptical, others see merit and potential for such technologies.
