If you've ever found yourself in a Prague grocery store, turning over a bag of chips to check the ingredients, you may have already spotted the EU difference.

Certain additives, dyes, and preservatives that appear freely in food sold in the US are either restricted or clearly labelled here. The way that snacks are engineered to crunch harder, or overwhelm with smoky barbecue flavor, isn't accidental; it's by design.

The same logic the EU applies to ultra-processed foods has now arrived for their dopamine-laced digital equivalents, the apps on your phone.

What is the DSA?

The Digital Services Act (DSA), the EU's landmark digital regulation, came into full enforcement in 2024, and its effects are starting to show.

In early 2026, regulators issued preliminary findings that platforms including TikTok and Meta may be in breach of obligations around transparency and addictive design.

This week, the European Commission signalled it's about to go further, targeting the design features built to keep you scrolling in the first place.
