January 2026 brings some of the most significant shifts in how mental health care works in Czechia in years, with reforms that affect everything from community support to cutting-edge treatments and national coordination.

At the start of the year, the government officially replaced the old National Mental Health Council with a new Government Council for Mental Health, tasked with coordinating policy across ministries and regions.

One of the biggest structural priorities is the expansion of community mental health centres. These hubs aim to shift care out of large psychiatric hospitals and into local, multidisciplinary teams, though auditors note that actual capacity remains limited and that legislation and funding need strengthening.
