Strong storms forecast across Czechia Monday
The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has issued a warning for strong thunderstorms, wind gusts and hail across much of Czechia on Monday. Storms are expected to develop from noon in southern and eastern Bohemia before moving east, potentially reaching all of Moravia and Silesia by 9 p.m. The storms will bring some badly-needed rain to drought-struck Czechia.
Weather warning: Storms could bring up to 30 millimeters of rain, small hail and wind gusts of up to 70 kph. A nationwide fire risk warning remains in effect.

Private partner planned for Prague airport rail link
The Czech government plans to select a private concessionaire next year to build and operate the railway section between Prague’s Veleslavín and Ruzyně as part of the planned rail link to Václav Havel Airport. The project is expected to cost about CZK 109 billion and would be the first public-private partnership on Czechia’s railway network.
Key details: The private partner would build the infrastructure and operate and maintain it for 25 years. The government is preparing the concession process for 2027.
Czech ministry set for name change
The Czech Senate is due to debate a proposal to rename the Ministry of Industry and Trade as the Ministry of Economy. The change is part of an amendment to construction rules that also proposes centralizing some government offices. Industry Minister Karel Havlíček says the current name no longer reflects the ministry’s broader responsibilities, including energy, telecommunications and artificial intelligence.
Senate debate: Three committees have recommended rejecting the wider bill, which could send it back to the Chamber of Deputies. The governing coalition says it is prepared to override a Senate rejection.
American cyclist wins Czech Tour race
American cyclist Andrew August won the 2026 Czech Tour after defending his overall lead in the final stage, despite finishing behind Italy’s Alessandro Fancellu. Fancellu won the stage to Pustevny, while Czech rider Václav Ježek finished fourth and placed seventh overall, 63 seconds behind August.
Race results: August, 20, became the youngest Czech Tour winner and also won the young riders’ and points classifications. Fancellu finished seven seconds behind him overall, while Jan Hirt placed ninth.

Prague exhibition recalls 1968 occupation
A free exhibition on Prague’s Wenceslas Square is remembering the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia through historical photographs, period vehicles and archival films. The event, titled “So Dreams Do Not Fade,” runs through Aug. 21 and includes evening film screenings and a concert marking the anniversary of the occupation.
Remembering Prague Spring: The Aug. 21 Concert Against Forgetting will feature about 10 bands and run from 12:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. All events are free.
