Maximum permitted fuel prices in Czechia will rise for the weekend and Monday, with the gasoline cap reaching its highest level since price regulation began at the start of October.

From Oct. 10 through Oct. 12, filling stations can charge up to CZK 47.67 per liter for standard diesel, an increase of CZK 0.38 from Friday. The cap for standard gasoline will rise by CZK 0.17 to CZK 46.48 per liter, according to the Finance Ministry’s latest price bulletin.

These figures are maximum permitted prices: stations can sell fuel for less. Premium fuels remain outside the regulation.

How the price caps work

The government introduced the current restrictions in response to rapidly rising pump prices in recent weeks. The measures are scheduled to remain in place through the end of October, with compliance monitored by the Specialized Financial Office.

The Finance Ministry calculates the caps using a rolling three-day average of wholesale prices, adding a retailer margin capped at CZK 2.50 per liter. The ministry normally sets the maximum prices for the following day; Friday’s announcement covers the next three days.

The government also reduced the excise tax on diesel at the beginning of October, from CZK 9.95 to CZK 8.011 per liter, in an effort to lower prices. The excise tax on gasoline was unchanged.

Another round of fuel regulation

Czechia used similar measures earlier this year, regulating fuel prices from mid-April to mid-July. The Finance Ministry estimated that the spring measures cost the state budget approximately CZK 1 billion a month.

The latest increase means the permitted gasoline price has continued to climb despite the renewed restrictions. Because the caps follow wholesale prices, they can rise or fall as those costs change.

For drivers filling up this weekend, the announced limits apply per liter and only to standard fuels. Check the grade before comparing prices, particularly when choosing between a station’s regular and premium products.
