Central Bohemia Pelted with Hail

Hailstones so thick they needed to be cleared with a snowplow covered Czech streets; storm warning in effect through Wednesday

Isolated areas of the Czech Republic were hit by intense storms early Monday evening, with some areas left with piles of hail so thick that traffic could not pass.

Central Bohemia and areas south of Prague were hit the hardest. In Komárov and Hořovice, the hail had to be cleared from the streets with a snowplow after roads were completely buried.

There were widespread reports of damage to vehicles, and a landslide in the German town of Schmilka halted train travel between Prague and Dresden. The track is currently being repaired and service is expected to resume around noon today.

Photos and videos of the storms and their aftermath quickly spread through social media.

While central Prague was also hit by some intense (if brief) rain, the Czech capital avoided the heaviest storms.

Weather on Tuesday is expected to be calmer, though rain is expected to continue in the region. A severe storm warning is in effect through midday Wednesday.
