These 20 names topped the baby charts in Czechia this year

Eliška and Jakub were the most common names given to newborns in Czechia last year, continuing a trend that began in 2012, Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) Chairman Marek Rojíček told reporters this week.

The second- and third-most popular names saw little change year over year. For boys, Matyáš and Jan followed Jakub, mirroring 2023’s rankings. Among girls, Viktorie remained in second place, while Sofie replaced Anna in third. The difference between Sofie and Anna was just seven babies, Rojíček said.

In total, around 84,000 babies were born in Czechia in 2024—roughly 7,000 fewer than in the previous year.

Statisticians recorded more than 3,200 different names for boys and over 3,500 for girls. Names with different spellings or forms, such as Emma and Ema, are counted separately.

Names gaining popularity include Sebastian, Amálie, Mia, and Sára. Sebastian entered the top 20 for the first time last year. Meanwhile, Simon and Marie dropped out of the top 20, indicating a decline in their usage.

Naming children after their parents remains more common for boys than girls.

Regionally, David and Anna topped the charts in Prague with outliers Meda (girls) and Teodor (boys) popping up in the list of the Czech capital's most popular names.

Statisticians also noted emerging trends in less common names. These include Czech variants of foreign names like Anton and Henry; names inspired by literature or film, such as Anakin, Tristan, Greta, and Marlen; as well as Jewish and old Czech names.

The name Jan holds a unique record, continuously remaining in the top 10 for boys since 1950 and ranking first 25 times. The name Petr was also historically popular but has since fallen out of the top 20. Jana has ranked first 25 times for girls since 1950, while Tereza has taken the top spot 15 times.
