Last month, we reported that the long-neglected Negrelli Viaduct beneath the train tracks near the Florenc metro station would be transforming into a summer hotspot

In the weeks following, there was little progress: a stroll through the area revealed little more than an overgrown parking lot littered with garbage, graffiti, and unpleasant odors.

But over the past ten days, there’s been a major turnaround, with the Viaduct preparing to unveil itself as a refurbished cultural destination this Thursday.

Gone are the rows of cars, with new gravel-lined pedestrian areas and wooden walkways & benches in their place.

And most impressively: a full-size beach volleyball court and sand pit flanked by pink netting has been alongside the street. Organizers might want to consider some top netting, too, to prevent balls from flying up onto the train tracks.

While the area has been generally cleaned to some degree, unsightly graffiti still lines the Viaduct walls. Our suggestion: get some real street artists to replace it with something better.

Throughout the summer, visitors can play a variety of games including not only beach volleyball and badminton, but also table tennis, basketball, darts, and table games; the official site even promises a trampoline.

Refreshments (along with sporting equipment) will be available from a snackbar provided by local bistro Divoké matky.

On Thursday, June 30, the area will be fully unveiled to the public during a cultural program that begins with dancing and gardening lessons at 16:00.

At 17:30, members of the municipality and organizers will give some short speeches before concerts by Johannes Benz at 18:00 and DJ Jiří Burian at 19:00.
