The Czech Defense Ministry has canceled a tender for up to 185 armored vehicles worth an estimated CZK 24.7 billion, citing economic factors and other circumstances preventing the procurement from continuing.
The four-wheel-drive vehicles were intended for the Czech Army in several configurations, including ambulances, engineering and bomb-disposal vehicles, and reconnaissance platforms.
Ministry spokesperson Petr Pešek confirmed the cancellation to Aktualne.cz, saying bidders had been informed in accordance with public procurement law.
Purchase was designated a strategic army project
The government led by former Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced the planned purchase in June 2025 and included it among the Czech Army’s strategic modernization projects.
The medium-weight vehicles were intended to equip military engineers, medics, special forces, and the Military Police.
“During the procurement process, circumstances worthy of special consideration arose, including economic reasons, that make it impossible to require the contracting authority to continue with the procurement process,” the ministry said in the public procurement registry.
The ministry did not provide further details about the economic concerns or indicate when a replacement tender might be announced.
Czech defense company Omnipol had planned to participate in the bidding. Spokesperson Marek Somol said the company would decide whether to take part in any future procurement after reviewing its specific conditions.
“We will decide on our next steps and possible participation in upcoming projects only once the specific parameters and conditions of the new tender are known,” Somol told Aktualne.cz.
Bushmaster vehicles previously identified as preferred option
Preparations to acquire new armored vehicles for the Czech engineering corps began in 2018 but were subsequently postponed because of insufficient funding.
In January 2024, the ministry asked state-owned defense company VOP CZ to update its analysis of available vehicles. A previous market assessment had identified the Australian-designed Bushmaster as the most suitable option.
VOP CZ signed a partnership agreement with multinational defense company Thales in May. Under the agreement, Bushmaster vehicles ordered by a European customer could be manufactured at VOP CZ’s plant in Šenov near Nový Jičín.
The Czech company had planned to submit a bid in the now-canceled tender. The Bushmaster is a protected mobility vehicle designed to transport troops and equipment while offering protection against mines, improvised explosive devices, and small-arms fire.
The ministry has not said whether the cancellation ends the acquisition plans entirely or whether the project will be revised and relaunched with different financial or technical requirements.
