This past week was International Women’s Day – is there a better time to roll out a study on sexual freedom, reproductive rights, and the bedroom habits of women across the continent?

New research released by makers of emergency contraception HRA Pharma surveyed women in 20 EU markets with the Czech Republic featuring prominently in the overall stats.

According to the study, 1 in 5 Czech women (22%) said that the use of erotic toys is key to a satisfying sex life (versus 12% European average). Spanish women were also cited as frequent users of bedroom toys (19%).

Some other interesting patterns emerged based on geography:

Southerners (Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal) are more open to trying out new positions (34%) than their neighbors to the north.

Young Bulgarians average four encounters a week, second only to Finnish women who claimed to have sex five times weekly and who prefer sex (42%) Monday-Thursday as opposed to the rest of European women (76%) who enjoy Saturday sex.

Over half of the women interviewed for the study cited spontaneity (52%), being in a secure relationship (74%), and having a hot partner (55%) as essential to satisfying sex.

More serious findings saw 1 in 3 women having unprotected sex at least once a month; this underscores the relevance of a recent ruling by the European Commission that granted over-the-counter access to emergency contraception in 25 EU member states.

A lighter milestone to coincide with the release of the study? The launch this month of the second generation vibrator, a smart sex toy manufactured in the Czech Republic and designed by, you guessed it, a Czech woman.
