Czech government seeks solutions to fuel crisis
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš is holding talks today with distributors and coalition partners to address the rising prices of diesel and gasoline at gas stations. While the government might move to cap retailers' margins to keep fuel prices from skyrocketing, the opposition put forward a proposal to reduce excise duties, and far-right leader Tomio Okamura suggested to lift sanctions on Russian oil imports.
Fifth person arrested over Pardubice fire
Czech police have arrested a fifth suspect in connection with the arson attack in the city of Pardubice earlier this month, Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar announced during a visit to Slovakia. Criminal proceedings for terrorism and participation in a terrorist group have now been launched against four people in the Czech Republic, with another still being detained in Slovakia.
250,000 tourists expected in Prague for Easter
Approximately a quarter of a million foreign tourists are expected to visit Prague throughout the Easter week and week-end, Prague City Tourism (PCT) said in a press release, a similar number as last year. "Easter symbolically opens the tourist season, and we're ready for it," assured František Cipro, chairman of PCT's board of directors.
New Czech law could make drink spiking a crime
The Czech Justice Ministry and a few MPs plan to submit a legislative proposal to criminalize drink spiking - the act of secretly adding either alcohol or drugs to someone's drink without his or her consent. For now, drink spiking has no legal basis in the Czech criminal code, and may only be indirectly prosecuted if linked to another crime like robbery, assault or rape.
Czech tennis players shine at Miami Open
Czech tennis player Kateřina Siniaková won the doubles title in Miami with U.S. partner Taylor Townsend against the Italian pair of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini - becoming the 6th women's doubles pair to complete the so-called Sunshine Double two weeks after their victory at the Indian Wells. And despite his defeat against world number two Jannik Sinner in the final, Jiří Lehečka moved up eight spots in the world rankings to reach 14th place.

POLL RESULTS: We asked readers their thoughts about the government's tentative plans to allow stores over 200 m² to stay open on holidays such as Easter Monday and Christmas. A majority of you, nearly 60 percent, agrees that large stores should be open on holidays and that businesses should decide. Close to a third (31 percent) disagree and argue that holidays should be for rest and family.
