Confirmed coronavirus cases in the Czech Republic surpasses 1,000

Prague, March 22 (CTK) – The number of novel coronavirus cases in the Czech Republic has reached 1,047 with 158 new cases recorded on Saturday, and six people reported to have been cured, the Health Ministry said today.

The first three cases of COVID-19 illness appeared on March 1.

Several patients are in serious condition in the hospital, but no one has succumbed to the illness. A total of 15,584 tests have been carried out.

A state of emergency has been put in place in the Czech Republic with a strict limitation on free movement and other restrictive measures put in place to prevent the outbreak from spreading.

Most of the infected are in Prague, followed by Central Bohemia. The least cases were detected in the Vysocina and Liberec regions. Men are predominant among them. Roughly two-thirds of the ill were infected in the Czech Republic.

On Monday, doctors announced that the first three people were cured. They are from Decin, north Bohemia. On Friday, they were joined by a woman from Frydek-Mistek, north Moravia. On Saturday, a student from Ecuador, one of the first patients hospitalized in Prague Na Bulovce hospital, and a woman from Masaryk Hospital in Usti nad Labem, north Bohemia, recovered from the illness.
