Confirmed: Brits in the Czech Republic to have two years’ protection under hard Brexit

When passing the bill, MPs also asked for it to be fast-tracked in the Czech Senate given the looming Brexit date of March 29.

Today, that bill was been approved by Czech senators in the upper house with a vote of 72-1, confirming the rights of British citizens residing in the Czech Republic over the next two years. It now awaits Miloš Zeman’s signature before being adopted into law, which should be a formality.

While the United Kingdom has a deadline of March 29 to approve conditions for leaving the EU, their government has yet to agree on those terms – leaving a lot of doubt about what may happen to its citizens across Europe if the UK leaves the EU without an agreement in place.

In the Czech Republic, however, at least some of that doubt has been taken away.

Under the new bill, British nationals residing in the country will have the same rights as EU citizens across the next two years, until the end of 2020.

While British citizens currently in the Czech Republic may need to obtain additional documents to reside in the country after 2020, they now have more time to do so; the exact terms of what that might entail will hopefully become more clear following the March 29 Brexit date.
