Czechia’s spell of warm, sunny autumn weather is expected to end Thursday as a cold front brings rain, stronger winds and a temperature drop of up to 10 degrees Celsius.

Afternoon temperatures will remain above 20 degrees Celsius through Wednesday, but daytime highs are forecast to fall to around 14 degrees by the weekend. Mixed or snowy showers could reach the highest mountain ridges Friday.

The shift will mark the likely end of this year’s babí léto, the Czech term for a period of warm and settled early-autumn weather.

Warm weather to last through Wednesday

Tuesday should be mostly clear or partly cloudy once morning fog and low cloud disperse. Temperatures will rise to between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius, although morning lows could fall to around 3 degrees in valleys, with isolated ground frost possible.

Wednesday will follow a similar pattern, with morning fog giving way to partly cloudy skies. Afternoon temperatures should reach between 19 and 23 degrees Celsius.

A wavy cold front will begin crossing Czechia from the northwest Thursday, bringing cloud and rain first to Bohemia before reaching Moravia and Silesia later in the day.

The timing will produce a significant regional divide: western Bohemia may reach only around 14 degrees Celsius, while southeastern Moravia could still record as much as 23 degrees before the colder air arrives.

Northwesterly winds could produce gusts of approximately 55 kilometers per hour along the front.

Snow possible on highest ridges

Friday is expected to be considerably colder, with daytime highs of only 11 to 15 degrees Celsius. Showers will be most frequent in mountain areas, where rain may temporarily turn to sleet or snow at the highest elevations.

The forecast does not indicate substantial snow accumulation. Any flakes should be largely confined to mountain ridges and represent a brief early taste of winter rather than the beginning of lasting snow cover.

Cloudy or overcast conditions are likely to persist through much of the weekend, accompanied by occasional showers and highs around 14 degrees Celsius. Skies could begin clearing over Bohemia Sunday afternoon.

The outlook remains subject to change as the cold front approaches. The latest national and regional forecast is available from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute.
