Along with the many joys of pregnancy, at some point comes the unavoidable realization that your trousers no longer button up, and your t-shirts simply don’t provide sufficient coverage for your fast-expanding waistline! It’s time to get a few essential maternity-wear items, but where do Prague’s mothers-to-be find the bargains? Here’s a short guide to těhotenská móda stockists in the city, with options to suit most budgets.

Counting the Crowns:

Bearing in mind that pregnancy is such a temporary state, with many mothers only requiring specially adapted clothing for a few months, perhaps the cheapest option is not to rush out and buy a new wardrobe at all, but instead to temporarily adapt your existing clothes with a clever device such as the Belly Belt which attaches to your normal jeans/trousers/shirts/skirts and extends the waistline to accommodate your growing bump. I found it listed on www.amazon.de (along with other similar products) for less than 30 EUR including delivery to Prague.

Prague Thrift Store
Šumavská 1050/29, Prague 2
Mon to Fri 10:00 – 19:00
Sat 10:30ish – 16:00ish

If second-hand clothes suit your budget, then check out Prague Thrift Store for a small but cheap range of maternity items including (during my visit) jeans, shorts, skirts and tops all for under 500 CZK. The shop also stocks baby and children’s clothes, toys, and equipment. Proceeds go to various good causes including a homeless center, childhood education services, and a single mother’s shelter.

Mid-range:

H&M
Myslbek, Na Příkopě 19 – 21, Prague 1
Mon to Sat 9:30 – 20:00
Sunday 10:00 – 18:00

The Na Příkopě branch of H&M stocks a wide range of casual and formal maternity wear. There are jeans and formal trousers (all with over the bump waistband) from 799 CZK, shorts (denim/khaki) from 499 CZK, leggings from 249 CZK and specially designed maternity/nursing t-shirts at 699 CZK for a pack of two. They also stock lingerie, including organic cotton maternity/nursing bras at 599 CZK for a pack of 2, 40 denier tights at 249 CZK for a pack of two, and swimming costumes for 499 CZK.

Mothercare
