Signs and reminders of World War II are still conspicuous across Prague and Czechia, ranging from brass-colored paving stones to show where Holocaust victims used to live, plaques to honor heroes from the Prague Uprising, to bullet damage preserved on the side of a church where Czechoslovak paratroopers who assassinated Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich were cornered by the Nazis.
This week marks another sad anniversary, of the massacre at Lidice on June 10, 1942. As part of the harsh reprisals for the Heydrich assassination, all of the men in the village were executed, while most of the women and children were sent to concentration camps. Every building in the entire village was then destroyed. Out of 503 inhabitants, only about 160 survived the war years.
