Coffee sharing, a new place for winter comfort pasta, and a pop-up restaurant comes to Lucerna

If news of Vinohrady favorite Kiin Modern Thai’s closing last year made you weep, fear not, the restaurant has re-opened as KiinDi at a new location on Michelska that has been beautifully designed by co-owner Tingting Shan.

 The menu, combining Chinese, Lao, and Californian influences, is just as innovative as the decor.

We tried Tom Yum soup (80 CZK) a spicy broth of shrimp, beets, lemongrass and galangal, Po Ped (99 CZK) spring rolls stuffed with duck, noodles, mango, and mint, Keang Ped (295 CZK), a mild red curry with grilled duck breast and lychee, and Pad Kra Pao (275 CKZ) a zucchini, eggplant, and beef stir-fry in Thai basil chili sauce.

The Pad Thai was a standout (215 CZK) and, for dessert, a Crème Brûlée with pandan leaf beneath the sweet crackly top. A bonus for parents: the kids’ corner. Theme nights, most recently a mahjong New Year’s Eve party, and cooking classes are on the roster of upcoming events, and a line of pre-packaged fresh take-away meals sure to be popular with the lunch crowd is in the works.

UGO Opens Salaterie

The UGO chain of juice bars has recently added made-to-order salads to its menu of Czech-raised fruit-and-veg creations. It will open a new “salaterie” location in Chodov Centurm in February which promises fresh greens and creative ingredients (pumpkin, quinoa, and Camembert are a current favorite) and warming soups (horse radish cream with sweet potato chips). 

Winter Pop-Ups

The annual Grand Restaurant Festival, is bringing a pop-up restaurant to Lucerna. From January 29 through February 28, Monarchie Restaurant will lend its space to Farma Košík, a farm-to-table treasure from Nymburk. The tasting menu features butter biscuits with quince cheese and lamb loin with boletus mushroom cream and herby sponge fingers, among other delicious fare.

Forbidden Taste pop-up restaurant and SaSaZu are teaming up for February 19th’s Pop Food Art evening with Chef Shahaf Shabtay and a crew of local artists. Details and location are being kept under wraps. There only 60 seats available for the event. To “apply” go here:

Comfort Food at Pastař

Newly opened Pastař is a casual, welcoming place that offers good portions for a great price. Occupying some prime real estate on Malostranské Nábřeží, formerly a bio-potraviny, this lovely little pasta place doubles as a specialty food shop that sells the “Čerstvá pasta” line of fresh pasta and sauces. Venison ravioli with sage and butter sauce (139 CZK), corn-fed chicken in rosemary sauce (195 CZK), and baked cheesecake (89 CZK)

 all made for a satisfying recent lunch. With a handful of cafe tables and a deli/bakery counter at the front of the restaurant it’s also a great place for a coffee or wine date.

El Barrio de Ángel Grill

El Barrio de Ángel has just opened a delicatessen and grill counter on the floor above its steakhouse restaurant. Given the South American steak, manchego cheese, and other quality items on offer from the deli case, the stale bread and processed “cheddar” that showed up on the turkey sandwich and the over-seasoned meat on the burger were a bit of a disappointment.

Coffeeshare Comes to Prague

The suspended coffee movement which originated in post-war Naples and has picked up steam in recent years, has finally landed in Prague. Twenty-two kavárny throughout the city now display Coffeeshare collection jars. Patrons can contribute their loose change in order to buy a hot drink for thoes who cannot afford it. Says the project’s spokesperson Petra Trachtmanová: “We would like to create an environment…where those well off enough to enjoy a cup of coffee in a cafe, can socially interact with those who typically could not, as well helping those less fortunate, those truly in need, by providing them with a warm beverage.” For more details visit
