Applications for Czech secondary schools closed on Feb. 20, and the data is now in. If you are a parent trying to get your child into a good secondary school in Prague, the numbers make for sobering reading.

You aren't just competing with the family down the street. You are competing with students from across the country.

According to fresh data from Cermat, the state organization that administers Czech secondary school admissions, roughly 43 percent of applicants for places at Prague secondary schools come from outside the capital.

More than a third of applicants from the Central Bohemian Region submitted their highest-priority application to a school in the city. Prague is not just the most popular destination for secondary school in the Czech Republic, it's in a category of its own.

More than 156,450 students applied for secondary school in the first round of entrance exams this year, a figure comparable to 2024. The total capacity across all secondary schools is 163,335 places; the most sought-after schools in Prague are fielding nearly three applicants for every available spot.
