The 10 best restaurants in the Czech Republic as chosen by the 2020 Maurer Guide

This year's list represents a diverse range of cuisines as well as smaller kitchens doing big things

The 2020 Maurer’s Grand Restaurant Guide has been released; its annual publication coincides with the opening of the Grand Restaurant Festival next month. The results, also published online, reveal its choice of the top 100 restaurants in the Czech Republic.

Similar to the American Zagat Survey, independent rankings are compiled using tips from reviewers, or “Gastronauts” in Maurer-speak. Restaurants are judged on food, service, interior, and price. This year 1,678 volunteer commissioners who secretly visited around 1,000 selected businesses.

As well as an “Absolute Top 10” a number of other categories are included in the guide, among them Top 10 Food, Top 10 Service, and an absolute Top 100 (of which users of the site can filter by a number of categories including most affordable). There is also a Top 20 as chosen by the “experts.“

Seven of the top 10 restaurants were in Prague this year. The list represents a wide range of cuisines from Asian to Czech and classic French. This year’s list is also notable for its inclusion of several smaller restaurants.

Levitate features a 15-course menu which takes roughly three hours to eat.

Last year’s winner, Terasa U Zlaté studně, didn’t rank among the ten best restaurants this year.

The guide was first published in 1997. The Grand Restaurant festival debuted in 2011 and last summer the Maurer’s Table project, a deals site for foodies, kicked off (it will return again in March 2020).

Two Prague restaurants retain their Michelin Stars
Prague’s two Michelin-starred restaurants didn’t appear in the top 10.

These were the best value restaurants according to this year’s Maurer guide:

The XI. GRAND RESTAURANT FESTIVAL will take place from January 15 to February 29, 2020. Eighty restaurants from all over the Czech Republic will prepare a menu based on a theme of “the magical number 2020.” Advance booking or the festival begins on December 2, 2019. A basic tasting starts at 300 CZK. This year themed walks, cooking classes, and events will also be held as a side program to the festival.
