Much of Czechia woke up to snow and below-freezing temperatures this morning as the country prepares itself for one of the coldest weeks of the year. Temperatures are set to remain below freezing for the whole week – even during the day.

Substantial snowfall on Sunday night led to complications around the country: iDnes writes that snow has “limited traffic in Central Bohemia,” with connections to Prague getting delayed. “At all arrivals to Prague, long queues have been forming since morning due to the snowfall,” writes iDnes.

“Passengers must expect delays on almost all lines of Prague Integrated Transport,” ČTK also quotes.

For the first time in this winter season, the Krkonoše Mountain Service announced a “level one” danger, the lowest-level warning of an avalanche on its five-level scale. The past 24 hours alone have seen 8 centimeters of snow fall in the mountainous region, bringing the total height of snow in the area to about 30 to 50 centimeters.

Freezing days and nights ahead

Novinky.cz writes that night temperatures will drop to as low as minus 14 degrees Celsius this week. Temperatures on Monday will not rise above 0 degrees Celsius, and more snow is expected in the afternoon across the whole country.

Tuesday morning will see a largely snow-free day with intermittent sun, but again with below-freezing temperatures in all regions during the day, according to the forecast of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute.

Snow will return on Wednesday, with a daily high of -2 degrees Celsius in Prague. Other regions, particularly to the north and east of the country, will see daily highs between -6 and -10 degrees Celsius, and lows that can reach -14 degrees Celsius.

Thursday’s temperatures will be generally similar to those on Wednesday, with clouds and light snow expected nationwide. Again, the daily high in the capital will remain below freezing, hovering at around -3 degrees Celsius.

Friday will be slightly colder, with morning temperatures forecast at about -5 degrees Celsius and evening temperatures estimated to reach -7 degrees Celsius.

The average high temperature in December in Prague is 2 degrees Celsius, whereas the average low temperature is -3.3 degrees Celsius, according to weather-atlas.com.

Saturday will on average have temperatures 1-2 degrees Celsius colder than on Friday, and people living in the capital can expect startlingly low temperatures of -9 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning.
