Prague Bus & Tram Stops to Get Wi-Fi

Up to 400 public transport stops are set to go online in the coming months

Did you know that you can connect to wireless internet at some of Prague’s tram and bus stops?

Currently, about a dozen public transport stops across the city offer wi-fi access as part of a test program, according to e15.cz. These stops include Budějovická, Anděl, Florenc, Želivského and Náměstí Míru.

And that number could greatly expand in the near future.

Company JCDecaux, which operates bus and tram stops in Prague, wants to bring wireless internet to 400 additional locations.

The wifi hotspot has a range of about 20 to 25 meters from the stops. Despite lack of public awareness, the current handful of locations register between 200 and 600 connections per day.

“That’s a lot when you take into account that people have not been informed officially,” said JCDecaux’s Tomáš Tenzer.

The company is currently waiting for consent from the city to implement the hotspots at additional locations, which is considered to be a formality.

As long as they get approval, wireless internet should hit another 100 tram and bus stops in the next two months, and 400 within the next quarter.
