Prague families can turn trick-or-treating into a good deed this October as the city’s annual Halloween Trick-or-Treat for Charity returns with more neighborhoods and opportunities to participate.

The event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Vinohrady, Vršovice, Žižkov, Prague 15, Holešovice, and Barrandov.

Children accompanied by their parents will use a secret map to find participating cafés, shops, schools, community centers, and private homes. At each stop, they place at least CZK 10 into a sealed charity collection box before receiving a sweet.

All money raised will support SOS Children’s Villages, which assists children, young people, foster carers, and families facing difficult circumstances in Czechia.

How families can take part

Families must register in advance to receive the map of participating locations. The organizers do not publish the host addresses openly, allowing children to discover each stop as part of the adventure.

Participants should prepare the following:

  • When: Thursday, Oct. 22, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Where: Vinohrady, Vršovice, Žižkov, Prague 15, Holešovice, and Barrandov
  • What to wear: A Halloween costume or mask
  • What to bring: Plenty of CZK 10 coins or other change for donations
  • Contribution: At least CZK 10 at every host location visited
  • Supervision: Children should take part with a parent or accompanying adult

Families do not have to visit every location on the map. They can select a manageable route in their preferred neighborhood and visit as many hosts as time and energy allow.

Registration forms, posters, and updates are available through the organizers’ online link hub and the event’s Instagram profile.

Businesses and residents can become hosts

Organizers are also inviting businesses, schools, clubs, family centers, and individuals to register as hosts. A host location becomes one of the marked stops on the secret map distributed to families.

Suitable venues include cafés, restaurants, confectioneries, shops, children’s play centers, schools, and private homes.

Hosts are asked to:

  • Provide sweets for visiting children
  • Add at least a small Halloween decoration
  • Wear a costume or simple accessory such as a hat or headband
  • Participate for at least two hours between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Give one treat to each child who makes a donation

The organizers provide each host with a sealed collection box. Hosts do not need to organize additional activities or purchase elaborate decorations, and inexpensive wrapped sweets are sufficient.

Hosting can also introduce neighborhood businesses to local families, while residents without children can join the event by opening their doors and handing out treats.

Last year’s event raised nearly CZK 300,000

More than 1,100 participants registered for the 2025 edition, which raised CZK 296,157 despite rainy weather. The full amount was donated to SOS Children’s Villages.

Journalist-turned-inclusion trainer Dinah Spritzer-Richter founded the initiative with several friends in 2017, initially organizing an American-style Halloween experience in Prague for her two children. Charity was central from the beginning, with proceeds supporting children through SOS Children’s Villages.

The small neighborhood event has since expanded to bring together Czech and international families. Its central idea reverses the usual Halloween transaction: children still receive something at every stop, but only after giving something themselves.

Organizers say the event also gives parents an opportunity to discuss why some children and families need additional support—and how even a small contribution can help. Find out more about how to participate in this year's edition here.
