Prague 7 Offers Free Czech Flags for November 17

One district in the Czech capital is giving away free flags to be displayed on Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day

Thursday, November 17, is Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day (Den boje za svobodu a demokracii) in the Czech Republic, a date honouring the demonstrations against Nazi occupation in 1939 and the Velvet Revolution in 1989 that led to the fall of Soviet rule in the country.

Preceded by Czech Statehood Day on September 28 and Independent Czechoslovak State Day on October 28, it’s one of the most important dates on the Czech calendar.

And one district in Prague is giving away free Czech flags for local residents to display on the historic date.

Prague 7 can pick up the flags between now and November 17 at one of three official information centers in the district.

This year, the municipality promises improvements in the flags that mean bearers won’t have to manually adjust them to place in standard flag brackets outside their windows.

If you live in a street-facing flat in an older apartment block in one of the central Prague districts, you might have noticed these brackets outside your window. They’re intended to hold the national flag on significant state holidays such as November 17.

Flags can be picked up at the following information centers in Prague 7:

  • Nábř. Kpt. Jaroše 1000 (Prague 7 Town Hall)
  • Milady Horákové 2
  • Dělnická 44
