Number of Czech COVID-19 recoveries tops 5,000; active cases drops under 3,000

The number of new coronavirus cases in the Czech Republic rose by 48 to a total of 8,275 on Wednesday

Prague, May 14 (CTK) – The number of new coronavirus cases rose by 48 to 8,275 on Wednesday, as the daily increase continues to rise by less under 100 over the past two weeks, according to data published by the Czech Health Ministry at 9:00 today.

There have been a total of 5,047 confirmed COVID-19 recoveries in the Czech Republic.

The death toll has risen to 290, with another two COVID-19-related deaths reported on Wednesday.

At present, there are 2,927 known active COVID-19 cases in the Czech Republic.

On Wednesday, laboratories conducted 7,360 coronavirus tests, roughly 1,000 fewer than on Tuesday, and confirmed the infection in 0.65 percent of those tested.

The ratio of positive results to all tests conducted has been under 1 percent, or just above it, for a long time.

In all, 335,000 coronavirus tests have been carried out since the outset of the coronavirus crisis in the Czech Republic.

Almost one-quarter of the infections have occurred in Prague, where laboratories have detected COVID-19 in 1,895 people. It is followed by the Moravia-Silesia Region with 1,168 cases.

COVID-19 infections by population is the highest in the Karlovy Vary Region with 148 cases per 100,000 people. It is followed by Prague and the Olomouc Region. The best situation is still in south Bohemia with 28 infected per 100,000 population.

Prague has the highest number of COVID-19-related deaths as well, at 93. It is followed by the Moravia-Silesia Region with 45.

The Zlin Region has recorded only one victim.

The elderly have made up the largest percentage of COVID-19 fatalities. There have been 1,700 infections among those over 65. A total of 260 of them have died and over 750 have recovered.

At present, 217 people are hospitalized with COVID-19. Of them, 42 are in serious condition.

The first coronavirus infection occurred in the Czech Republic on March 1.

Thanks to favorable developments in terms of the number of new cases, the Czech government has been gradually lifting the lockdown rules that have restricted people’s free movement, assembly, traveling, business, culture, sport, school lessons, and other activities since mid-March.

The next wave of restriction softening, including the lifting of the duty to wear face masks outdoors, is to follow on May 25.
