Czech men are doing very well in the fertility department, thank you very much, reports iDnes. According to a newly released survey by sexologists, sperm count among Czech males is up thanks to a healthier lifestyle.

“The dramatic decrease in fertile men is a myth,” a spokesperson for the Institute of Sexology recently told reporters.

This refers to a previous study which reported that Czech men have been plagued by a low sperm count in the past decade or so.

The World Health Organization considers a sperm count of 15 million spermatozoa per milliliter of ejaculate on the low side for male fertility. Czech men who were screened this year averaged 61 million. The average age of the men examined was 34.7 years.

Research in 1980 showed an average sperm concentration of 40 million among Czech study participants; in the past 15 years those numbers dropped to as low as 15 million. But the results were evaluated according to differing criteria, say researchers.

“Earlier tests on sperm lacked standard and comparable results and could appear to indicate that male fertility is declining,” the institute said.

They went on to say that:

“Our clinical experience does not indicate a decrease in the concentration of sperm in the semen of healthy young men under investigation in connection with infertility.”
