Strani, Central Moravia, Dec 31 (CTK) – Czechs and Slovaks jointly celebrated the last day of the year at the Velka Javorina border mountain today.

Several thousand people climbed to the summit of the White Carpathians border mountains.

Some were walking, others came by cars and buses. Families with children used the snow-covered mountain meadows for winter sports such as sledging.

The idea of traditional meetings of Czechs and Slovaks on the Velka Javorina was born as a symbolic expression of disagreement with Czechoslovakia’s division in 1992.

The event also pays homage to former Czechoslovak environment minister Josef Vavrousek who died with his daughter in an accident in the High Tatras, central Slovakia, in 1995.

The two nations also meet at the summer brotherhood festival in the White Carpathians.
