Chinese Embassy protests statements by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Prague

Prague, Aug 12 (CTK) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is attacking China without any substantiation, tarnishing it and fomenting discord between other countries and China, the Embassy of China said in reaction to Pompeo’s statements in Prague.

The Embassy said Pompeo’s words were full of ideological bias and Cold War ideas, running counter to the present-day trends.

After meeting Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) earlier today, Pompeo said the Communist Party of China was trying to destroy Western democracy and alliances.

In his speech to the Czech Senate, he said China was a worse threat than Russia, appreciating the plan of upper house chairman Miloš Vystrčil (Civic Democratic Party, ODS) to visit Taiwan at the end of August and beginning of September.

Pompeo said the partnership with Russian and Chinese state-run companies in the construction of another unit in the Dukovany nuclear plant, south Moravia, would weaken Czech national security and sovereignty.

In the name of democracy and freedom, Pompeo is attacking without any substantiation China, tarnishing it, trying to blame China for all existing problems and deliberately fomenting discord between other countries and China, the Embassy of China said.

His words and conduct are full of ideological bias and Cold War ideas that run counter to the present-day trend, the spokesman for the Embassy of China said.

Pompeo’s statements against China are dubious and not right, he added.

As a Czech proverb says: people are often caught in their own trap, the spokesman said.

He said he recommended to Pompeo that he respect historical facts, international rights and basic rules of international relations in order to act in harmony of interests of both China and the USA as well as the joint interests of the people of the whole world.

Pompeo should stop spreading a political virus and disinformation, should stop interfering in the internal affairs of China and harm solidarity and cooperation of international communities, the spokesman said.

Pompeo started his visit to the Czech Republic on Tuesday. He has met Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek, Prime Minister Andrej Babis and President Milos Zeman.
