VIDEO: Prague’s Worst Exchange Office Outed

After their taxi driver takedown, YouTube channel Stream International targets “Prague’s worst tourist trap”

Prague is no stranger to tourist traps and other scams targeting new arrivals to the city, whether it be hidden fees or cover charges in restaurants to inflated taxi fares.

Last year, local filmmaker Janek Rubeš outed some of Prague’s most notorious taxi drivers, and took aim at City Hall for not doing anything about the ongoing situation.

His actions led to some real effects, including action by Prague mayor Adriana Krnáčová and the publicized arrest of at least one taxi driver in Prague.

Now, Rubeš and his YouTube channel Stream International are targeting what they call “Prague’s worst tourist trap.” 

It’s an exchange office located at Old Town Square that has been ripping off customers for decades, according to their latest video.

The office in question, a Chequepoint located at the corner of Staroměstské náměstí and Železná street, currently features signs promoting a “0% commission.”

But while that may be true, they also exchange 15 CZK for 1 EUR. The current rate is about 27 CZK to 1 EUR.

During the video, Rubeš can be seen in front of the location (and inside of it!) informing potential customers of the rates and directing them to other locations for better deals.

Despite a visit from city and state police, and a letter from the exchange office’s lawyer’s threatening jail time, Rubeš and his team were undeterred and spent the day warning tourists.
