No job, second child: New Czech rules expand access to maternity benefit

From July 1, women may be eligible for maternity benefit even if they are not currently insured at the time of starting maternity leave.

A new amendment effective from July 1, 2026 will allow some women in the Czech Republic to receive maternity benefit even if they are no longer employed and are not in a so-called usual protective period after employment ends

The change is designed mainly for mothers who have a second child shortly after the first and previously fell outside the system despite having worked and paid into sickness insurance.
