Czech Tennis Star Petra Kvitová Injured in Knife Attack

The two-time Wimbledon winner has suffered cuts on her hand in an apparent robbery attempt at her Prostějov home this morning

26-year-old Czech tennis star and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová has been injured in an apparent knife attack this morning, according to police reports published by iDnes.cz.

The unknown assailant gained entry to Kvitová’s home near the town of Prostějov at around 8:30 in the morning under the guise of checking her boiler.

“He threatened her with a knife and the woman suffered injuries,” police spokesperson Prostějov František Kořínek told iDnes. “There has been a theft.”

Police did not reveal further details of the ongoing investigation. The assailant is believed to be at large.

According to Prostějovský Večerník, the injuries include serious cuts to all fingers on Kvitová’s left hand, with which she holds the tennis racket.

Surgeons will “most likely” operate on the hand this evening, according to a source close to Kvitová’s management, with the star’s future in tennis in jeopardy.

“It was a random criminal act, it was not someone that wanted to rob [specifically] Petra Kvitová,” a spokesperson for the athlete said.

One of the Czech Republic’s top-ranked tennis stars, Kvitová won titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014.

This past summer, she took home bronze at the Olympic games in Rio in women’s singles play.
