Pride in being a Czech highest since 2005, says new poll

Prague, Nov 12 (CTK) – Czechs’ feelings of pride for being citizens of the Czech Republic are highest in 14 years, reaching 53 percent, according to the results of a Public Opinion Research Centre (CVVM) poll released today.

The last time the public feeling of pride for their Czech citizenship was higher than 50 percent was in 2005, when it reached 57 percent.

The lowest number was detected in 2013, when only 39 percent of citizens felt pride for being citizens of the Czech Republic.

Only a small part of Czechs feel shame for being Czech citizens, only 6 percent. The highest share of people, 18 percent, felt shame for being Czech citizens in 2012.

Feelings of pride were more often expressed by seniors and university graduates. Among the voters of various political parties, the voters of ANO feel pride for being Czech citizens more often than others.

The CVVM also asked people where would they like to live if they could choose any country in the world, with 77 percent saying they would like to live in the Czech Republic. Only 16 percent of respondents would like to live in a different country than the Czech Republic.

Another question focused on the willingness of people to defend their country against a military threat. Only 33 percent of respondents said they would do so, a similar result to polls conducted in the past.

The poll was conducted on roughly 1,021 people over 15 between October 5 and 20.
