Beards, Ahoj! Barbershop Boat to Anchor In Prague this Week

The fact that men increasingly have their own cosmetic routines and rituals is evidenced by the increasing number of barbershops in the Czech capital.

Although the salon treatment of beards has a lengthy history, in the past decades it has receded somewhat into the background.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, however, it was an integral part of the life of almost every Czech man, not only for the purpose of keeping up appearances but above all as a fulfillment of his social duties.

“In Scotland, barbershops have their own tradition, and young boys learn from their fathers that a well-maintained appearance is essential,” says Suzie Gillespie, owner of the Edinburgh salon The Players Lounge, who, along with colleague Suzane Davila-Ruiz will attend the first Prague Barber Festival on Thursday.

In addition to beard trims from Scotland, the evening will also showcase leading Czech hairdressers who will be on hand to give razor shaves and other tips.

Admission includes a five-whisky tasting flight and live music from British musician Adrian T. Bell of the Prague-based band The Prostitutes, who will serve up a catchy rock set from both of his solo albums during the evening.

The event starts at 19:00 on August 10.

Admission is 200 CZK in advance or 250 CZK at the door.
