Prague Zoo will offer 1-CZK entry for kids tomorrow during the teachers’ strike

Prague Zoo will give children something to do when schools are closed.

Many schools in Prague and across the Czech Republic will be closed November 6 due to a teachers’ strike. Prague Zoo in response is reducing the admission fee for 1 CZK for children and students during the strike, and 50 CZK for adults. The zoo will be open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Prague Deputy Mayor Petr Hlubuček (United Force for Prague) said the city wants to relieve the burden on parents and schools. Many schools plan to be open with a partial staff, but not have full lesson programs. The exact list of schools that will close will be announced on the morning of November 6.

“We decided to
relieve our parents and offer an alternative program for our children
in the time of the teachers’ strike in the form of a visit to our zoo
for a symbolic 1 CZK,” Hlubuček said.

The zoo was happy to
support the idea.

“Although we usually are very cautious on discounts, we welcomed the idea of Deputy Mayor Hlubuček to allow children to enter the zoo for a symbolic entrance on the day of the teacher strike,” Prague Zoo director Miroslav Bobek said.

Visitors can see the recently opened Rákos House, with its collection of rare parrots and other birds in their natural habitats. A new pavilion for gorillas is under construction but not yet open.

The zoo currently
covers 58 hectares with 50 hectares used for exhibits. It has over
4,700 animals from 681 species, including 144 species listed as
threatened. It opened opened on Sept. 28, 1931.

Prague Zoo in 2018 saw some 1.4 million visitors, the third-highest level ever. This was an unexpected success due to the high summer temperatures and the absence of the Stromovka footbridge, which collapsed at the end of 2017. The zoo was also successful in breeding in 2018 with 1,340 babies from 219 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

Significant births in 2019 include a sea lion who is the grandson of Gaston, a sea lion who died in the 2002 floods after attempting to swim back to the sea. At the start of the main season in 2018, the fully renovated Gaston restaurant opened, named for the popular sea lion. Lemurs, monkeys, and giraffes have also been born in 2019.

The zoo is rated fifth-best in the world by the travel website TripAdvisor, based on user reviews. It had been ranked as high as fourth in 2015.
