Hey there, my name is Amelia and I am a singer trained in both classical and popular vocal techniques with 5+ years of experience teaching private popular voice lessons. I studied popular voice technique under Willy Gutiérrez in Guatemala City for 5 years; I then moved to Seattle, WA where I obtained an Associates in Music with an emphasis in vocal performance from Shoreline Community College. I later transferred to finish my BA at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, on classical vocal performance under Wendy Zaro-Mullins. During my university studies I continued to sing jazz and study jazz vocal technique with Andy Shaw, among other teachers.
In my classes I focus on teaching proper vocal technique to create a versatile instrument, which basically means I give you the tools to develop your voice and sing whatever you love singing the most with a safe and beautiful technique. Jazz, ballads, musical theater, world music, you name it.
However, keep in mind that I teach popular voice technique. What does that mean? To make things short it is a use of the voice which brings a heavier, chest-dominant sound to higher registers. Part of that is what is known as belting, used in musical theater and most popular music styles. Yet we will also work on your head voice and how to mix both registers smoothly.
If you wish we can also work on repertoire as well. I do not teach classical voice technique, nor do I work with classical repertoire despite my years of training. Please keep that in mind, and if you want to explore your popular voice let's give this a try. ;)
