Come and join the dynamic Multimedia Unit in Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Central Newsroom. We are seeking a Photo Editor with a strong journalism background for a temporary, full-time position.

The Photo Editor is responsible for selecting content to be used by RFE/RL's English-language website and language services from internal resources, news agencies, and other outside sources and to organize and create photo galleries under tight deadlines and breaking news situations. She/he responds to requests from across the company for images. The Photo Editor must maintain the quality of photos and metadata in the company's Content Management System. The Photo Editor must have a strong understanding of copyright law and image rights management issues. He/she must be able to write clean, fast, and accurate captions that conform to Central Newsroom style. The Photo Editor must be able to keep up with world news and developments in RFE/RL’s coverage areas. She/he should be a good field photographer, understand the requirements of photo journalism, and also be familiar with Adobe Photo Shop. Native level English is required.

Please note: this position is a temporary full time position for up to 3 months.

Main Responsibilities

  • Photo gallery management: Selecting photos from services and news agencies for photo galleries, editing of photos, uploading of photos from agencies and transferring photos from services. Finding photos to match stories and also the stories behind photos
  • Training: Train RFE/RL staff on all aspects of photo journalism -- camera techniques, composition, technical operation, image selection, image editing, captioning and introduction writing.
  • Photo editing: Photo selection from services and news agencies. Making sure all photos meet RFE/RL quality standards and rights management is handled properly. Respond to internal requests for images to be added to our database.
  • Photographer management: Manage relationships with RFE/RL bureau photographers and freelancers, providing guidance and handling administrative issues such as payment.
  • Collaboration: Interact and collaborate with RFE/RL and outside journalists on photo-related projects. Represent the Multimedia Unit's photo work in editorial meetings and with other media organizations.

Minimum Qalifications:

  • Education in Journalism or a related field or its equivalent.
  • Experience as a photo editor or photo-journalist (1 year)
  • Solid grounding in modern photo editing techniques.
  • In addition to working regular shifts is expected to be available during important, breaking news events, and work as assigned by a supervisor, mandatory.
  • Ability to take direction while working under pressure
  • Should be proficient in basic web posting.
  • Accuracy and detail orientation.
  • Experience of working under deadline.
  • English language native level, mandatory
  • Broadcast region language (Working Knowledge), advantage
