City of Gold / Laura Gabbert / USA 2015 / 96 min. – Documentary feature, launched at the Sundance festival, follows the legendary Californian food and music reviewer Jonathan Gold (1960–2018) in his never-ending exploration of the ethnic and culinary diversity of the city of Los Angeles. Gold’s passion for street food and the under-the-radar restaurants owned by immigrants allowed Angelenos not only to find the best hot dog or the most authentic Thai food in town, but more importantly also to forge a closer bond with their buzzing, sprawling, ethnically incredibly diverse metropolis (Greater Los Angeles area is home to approx. 19 million people from over 140 countries who speak 224 languages that have been identified). Gold’s unique writing style made him the very first food writer to be awarded the Pulitzer prize; mixing deep knowledge of the matter with enthusiasm, sharp eye for detail with poetic language, his pieces for the LA Times and the LA Weekly still remain one of the most inspiring and intriguing texts ever dedicated to food and urban life.

The screening is a part of FoodCAMP, a series of events dedicated to the synergies between food and urbanism.
