No ordinary concerts in no ordinary year. Avishai Cohen’s _Strings of Autumn performances promises to be unique experiences in at least two ways. Cohen, who usually plays to huge crowds at major concert halls and festivals, will play with his trio for an audience of just 300 people. And the venue for these shows is no less extraordinary: open-air on the rooftop of the Lucerna palace, with a panorama of Prague as backdrop. Along with Avishai Cohen, pianist Elchin Shirinov and drummer Roni Kaspi will perform.

Jerusalem-born Avishai Cohen, who this year celebrates his 50th birthday, began his career in the 90s and, after a spell playing with pianist Chick Corea, embarked on a successful solo career, one which Czech audiences have followed at first hand. Cohen has released a string of albums taking in elements of jazz and world music, and has also made tasteful ventures into the world of pop. He is now a global star whose popularity extends far beyond the boundaries of the jazz community. Cohen has built a remarkable career taking in albums and concert performances across a range of genres, from orchestral projects to the jazz-pop formation 1970. But it’s the trio format that remains the context in which Avishai Cohen’s music can be enjoyed at its purest: a thrilling sound derived from complex polyrhythms and grooves, with the virtuosity of the individual players tastefully employed to serve the needs of the group as a whole. This is a rare chance to see the master up-close and personal.

“Teeming with energy, original ideas and virtuoso soloing… Cohen [belongs] among the elite bassists on the scene today,” Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times.

In case of bad weather, the concert will take place at the Lucerna Music Bar.
