About

Remarkable building, which is situated on the Vltava embankment and which is known home and also abroad under the similar name MÁNES, is closely connected with the history of the Club of the artists Mánes, which was found on the year 1887. During its existence it associated long crowd of the generation of the Czech artists, sculptors, architects, photographers and theorists of art. The first provost of the Club Was chosen Mikoláš Aleš, to its protagonists belonged generally creators of the modern Czech culture, as Jan Kotěra, Jan Preisler, Stanislav Sucharda, Otakar Novotný, Josef Gočár, Emil Filla, Václav Špála, Rudolf Kremlička, Max Švabinský, Karel Dvořák, Jaroslav Fragner, Vincence Makovský, Josef Sudek, Jan Bauch and many others. Club Mánes intensively pursued especially to the exhibition activity and to the editorial activity. It sparkplug large amount of the exhibitions, by which it remaindered key celebrities of the domestic art tradition and by which it introduce to Prague also leading representatives of the world art, for example at the legendary exhibitions of the August Rodin in 1902, Edvard Munch in 1905 or of the Modern French painting. The exhibition activity proceeded with the new intensity after building of the new Clubhouse in the places of the former Šítkovské mlýny in 1930. The long-term chairman of the Club Mr. Otakar Novotný projected building, which is top work of the European functionalism. Except above mentioned, Mánes was issued monthly journal Volné směry (Free directions) and editorial series of the book monographs Prameny (Sources), Zlatoroh and Books of Mánes, in which it publicised domestic and also word modern art. Activity of the Mánes far exceeded border of the Czech countries. To its foreign members belonged the most significant artists and architects of the 20th Century, as was Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Mare Chagal, Salvador Dali, Frank Lliyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius and others. Mánes always was not only centre of the artistic avant-garde, but also prestigious social and gastronomic centre of Prague.
