One of the most important artistic personalities of Czech modernism, painter, sculptor, graphic artist and art theorist, Emil Filla, is presented in an exhibition showing until 4th November in Troja Chateau. The retrospective exhibition was put together from the Prague City Gallery collection, which has around a hundred works by this artist. The selection presented in the exhibition, to mark the 130th anniversary of Filla’s birth, represents the full range of his work, from the early cubist period to the artistic climax of Filla’s life.
In Picasso’s shadow
The retrospective exhibition of the most famous Czech cubist painter takes place on the ground floor of Troja Chateau, where visitors will see a cross-section of his works, from familiar still life to his famous female figures, which are comparable in quality to the best cubist works by Pablo Picasso. Filla is currently among the most expensive and most desirable artists of Czech modernism and it is always a remarkable experience to look at his work in such a comprehensive form.
A cubist tour with Filla
In the hall of the chateau curator Sandra Baborovská presents Filla’s etchings, water colours and drypoints, as well as his iconic still lifes and famous nudes. “I didn’t want to exhibit all the works that we have in the collection. Rather that the visitor should have an experience resembling a tour of his work. I therefore chose the most fundamental works which illustrate the milestones in his creative life,” says Baborovská.

The collection keeps growing
The works of Emil Filla from the Prague City Gallery collection were exhibited collectively for the first time forty years ago. Since then the collection has increased by several important works (Oblík, Still Life On a Table, Wedding Shirt, Na hore vták, Still Life with Bottle of Rum, Still Life (Rotterdam), etc.) which were bought by the gallery mainly in the late 1970s and 1980s. The last time a number of Filla’s works went on display to the public was in Prague Castle Riding School in 2007.
OPENING HOURS:Tue–Sun 10–18 h, Fri 13–18 h
